Scholarly journals vs. popular magazines
Periodicals are usually separated into two major groups:
1. Scholarly
- usually referred to as journals
- usually discipline-specific
- geared towards scholars, researchers, & professionals and are often peer reviewed or refereed
- more scholarly or technical articles
- cite sources of related research
- usually published on a quarterly (
Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall) or monthly basis.
- contain few photographs or advertisements
- Long in-depth articles cover case studies, report research and contain bibliographies

- usually referred to a magazines
- geared towards the general public
- provide general information to a wide audience
- rarely provide footnotes or cite sources of information
- contain many photographs & advertisements
- usually issued once a week or once a month
